Marketing Convergence Thoughts

Marketing Convergence

According to the previous lesson that we had tackled last July 30, our instructor had discussed some important facts about the Marketing Convergence and other scopes of it. Now, this essay that I will show to you will be discussing more about Marketing Convergence. To continue with this essay, let me describe to you first what the meaning of the word marketing and convergence is.  Though I already have the idea what is the true meaning of marketing but to explain it further I searched the internet and found the meaning of the Marketing word from Wikipedia.com. It is said that marketing is "the activity, set of institutions, and processes for creating, communicating, delivering, and exchanging offerings that have value for customers, clients, partners, and society at large. Marketing is used to identify the customer, satisfy the customer, and keep the customer. With the customer as the focus of its activities, marketing management is one of the major components of business management. Marketing evolved to meet the stasis in developing new markets caused by mature markets and overcapacities in the last 2-3 centuries. Now that’s the meaning of the marketing. Next, I will be explaining to you what the meaning of convergence is. I think that convergence is the goal of and work towards establishing a single set of accounting standards that will be used internationally.
To explain further, Marketing Convergence is the orchestration of information technology, marketing and design required to ensure that companies present an integrated, consistent, clear and interactive message across all the media they use. Now, from the internet I found an article that talk about the Marketing Convergence. The article said that by avoiding the mistake of oversimplifying the subject matter, the author had decided to talk about one emerging trend whose impact is great enough to influence market trends and the way that they do business.  This trend is the emergence of a classless consuming sector. This is merely one trend. It is not an all encompassing trend. However, it offers great possibilities and opportunities. He called it MARKET CONVERGENCE.
He also included that some of us have heard a lot about technology convergence, or the convergence of telephone, television and computer. Accompanying this development is the commoditization of many of the technologies that were developed in the past century. Stan Davies described that era as being characterized by emergent technologies. It started with real time processes and the principle of miniaturization popularized by the Japanese that commoditized many old-economy products. It peaked with the introduction of the digital technology that redefined the concept of space and distribution. That era created new products that fascinated consumers and created a demand that produced many multi-billionaires in less than 10 years. It took this era only 20 years to duplicate what the old economy accomplished in over 100 years. That era is about to end. The internet bust and the dislocation of millions of IT workers are perhaps the concluding statements. The Next Economy is about to unfold if it is not yet in our midst. As in the past era, it is something that we’ve never seen before and perhaps something that we in the Philippines might again miss given our culture for resisting change and transformation. That era brought with it a trend towards market convergence.
To continue, let me ask you a question.  What is Market Convergence really is?  There are lots of examples given from the article that he created. Here are some examples of it: The trend towards connectivity, the trend towards eating convenience, the trend towards a shopping community, and the trend towards wellness.
Let us say that we want a convenient way to shop for our favorite clothes without going outside the house. All of us think that the better way to shop without going outside is to shop online thru the use of internet connection. This may be an example of a trend of a marketing convergence. The process would start from dealing with a company that provide or sell clothes and a company that uses the World Wide Web to promote products via online. Both of them have the same goal which is to provide customers with their products.  In this sense, the marketing convergence is happening. Both of them will decide the marketing strategies that would serve as their offer to the costumers that longing to shop indoors via online marketing.
Another example from the article is this: Across the various segments, the mallers go to malls to be entertained, to shop, to eat/dine, and to look for specialty item. They crowd the same places to do practically the same things, at the same shopping hours, and during the same shopping days. Top 10 malls frequented in Metro Manila (in ranking order) are: SM Megamall, Ayala Center, Robinson’s Place, Alabang Town Center, Festival Mall, Powerplant Rockwell, Edsa Shangri-la Mall, Robinson’s Galleria, SM City, and SM Manila. Economists have been studying market convergence and have come out with many materials in the last two years. Marketing is left behind. Marketing practitioners, in fact, have to start understanding the principles and implications of market convergence.
The perspective that we should take is to ask what strategic options are open to firms faced with market convergence and discuss the firm level initiatives that might make them more or less successful in their strategic. When market convergence unleashed its might in such industries as communication, food and retail, how did we fare? The wellness industry is threatening to capture the imagination of a classless sector. How are we positioned to take advantage of this opportunity? What other markets have the tendency to converge? What are the predictors of market convergence? As marketing practitioners, we need to respond these questions. As marketing practitioners, we need to understand such trends.
Lastly, let me share this to you. It was written by Thomas Friedman. He said that People around the globe are pretty much pursuing the same goal: the basic human desire for a better life; a life with more choices as to what to eat, what to wear, where to live, where to travel, how to work, what to read, and what to learn.

Reflection 3: Guy Kawasaki Video

Reflection 3: Guy Kawasaki Video

The video that was assigned by our instructor to view and make some reflections was all about the words of wisdom by Guy Kawasaki. First and foremost, let me describe this person as a part of this essay. Guy Kawasaki is a Technopreneur and the first Technology Evangelist as what the speaker from smart told us while we were in the Boot Camp conducted by Idea Space Company and sponsored by Smart Telecommunications. The speaker was sure about what he was saying. Then I tried to find his name in google and then I found out that he was born in Hawaii in August 30, 1954. He is also a successful Silicon Valley capitalist. He was also hired by the Apple Company which was founded by Steve Jobs. He is currently a Managing Director of Garage Technology Ventures, and has been involved in the rumor reporting site Truemors and the RSS aggregation Alltop.

To continue, let me proceed to my reflections about the Guy Kawasaki video that I recently watched. Last October 20 in the year 2004, Guy Kawasaki had a video interview pertaining to the core and essentials of being a technopreneur. He said in the first part that technopreneurship is about making meanings. If I base my opinion, I would rather say that technopreneurship is about making difference. When we make difference, we are always come up with good or bad ideas that would grant our desires to make something new or something fresh technologies that may change our lives. As what Guy Kawasaki said in the interview, many people around the globe start companies to make money for their own or for a better purpose. He also said that it is fundamentally founded to change the world to make the world a better place. Yes, it is definitely true for me because the world needs to change every now and then. Better to have the technology that were invented before to be innovated in the sense that we people trying to come up with better, futuristic and upgraded technologies to help our country or the world to be a better place to live. Sir Guy also told that whoever makes meaning of the companies that make a difference, they are the companies to succeed. If you make meaning, you would probably make money. But if you set out to make money, you wouldn’t probably make meaning and you won’t make money as what he have said during the interview of his video.

His first thought was “You have to make meaning”. He was generally emphasized that phrase to make us technopreneurs to be motivated and if we try to remember that phrase, we must set our priorities and do our responsibilities as a human being and a member of our society. The phrase that I mentioned a while ago must be the core to start a new company.

He also included and explained the three ways to make meaning. While the video was running to capture his body gestures and motion, he said that one of the ways to make meaning was to Increase the quality of Life. So what would be the meaning that would satisfy this statement? If I would use my own common senses, I would probably say that increasing the quality of life is like making your life more productive in any circumstances that you may able to encounter as you try to keep your journey straight forwarded. He was in the Macintosh Company where apple and Mac Operating Systems was invented by the deceased person Steve Jobs. I would say that we are not motivated to make money; we are motivated by changing the world to make people more creative and more productive.
“There are things to increase the quality of life”. He also added this as a way to make meaning. He said to the interview that he was so optimistic of having a good spirit by waking up every morning and he also said that he was always thingking of how they could change people’s lives.  For me, that’s definitely true and I agree with Guy Sebastian. There must be a thing to increase the quality of life by creating new ideas that would definitely be an essence of making money. I was a little bit inspired or motivated about what have he said in this video. Guy Kawasaki was also a great technopreneur that has a lot of skills that would really help our society and even the students that are still studying in their respective universities.

The next one that he has said was to make right a wrong. Guy Kawasaki also cited some of the problems that were so hard to deal with. When you found something wrong and you want to fix this that you see something beautiful and wonderful and you cannot stand the fact that the road is being changed and   ruined. You must put a solution here so that you can make the wrong to become right. For me, I was also thinking that why we would do the thing that if you found already that the right must not remain its figure. Like for example, the “Right” is the old vacuum and all you need to know that what if I would change the right to be wrong and then if we found a better solution to our dilemmas, that would be the time that we must change the wrong to right as it goes to the process of being successful in everything that we are doing. He also added that if you are trying to make a company then you must not really on to your families, friends and even the person inside the congregation of the church.

There was a tag line that he said from the video that he recorded was this: "If you haven’t had one of those motivations yet, You must re think the key to start an organization". So in conclusion, all of us must try to follow and remember well the 3 ways to make meaning and core and essentials of being an technopreneur.

SONA 2012- ICT RELATED AREAS

The areas that are related to Information and Communication Technology or ICT that I had identified from his SONA last July 23 2012 were the following:

·         PROJECT NOAH.

Automated Rain Gauges and water level monitoring sensors are those technologies that were discussed during the SONA of Pres. Noynoy Aquino. He said that he would try to give fair warning to Filipinos in order to prepare them for typhoons, cyclones, floosh floods and other natural disasters that would be dangerous to all mankind. He will have them installed in 80 primary river basins around the country.
This kind of project would be a great help for the disaster managements and for the safety of all people around our country.

·        BUSINESS PROCESS OUTSOURCING (BPO)

Pres. Noynoy also included the Business Process Outsourcing or those businesses that are related to Call Centers and outsourcing. He said that this kind of business eleven years ago has been so slow and unproductive but now it is a very huge advantage for our country to have the BPO businesses because according to what he have said, the BPO already generated eleven billion dollars to the economy of our country. He also projected that this industry would contribute more money that would worth 25 billion more or less. He also added that this industry had employed almost 638,000 people.
So far, I would really say that this kind of industry would be a great help for our country by employing more people and it will also contribute billions of dollars in our government.

·         iGovPhil

iGovPhil is a joint initiative of the Information and Communications Technology Office (ICTO) and the Advanced Science and Technology Institute. This project is meant to be a stepping stone for what will eventually become a type of Government Cloud, where agencies can integrate and share data and enable online services for public-facing government agencies.
He said with this project, the customer experience of the citizens and the government will really improve, and bureaucratic red tape that is usually a cause for anxiety among our citizen will be eliminated.

Being a Good Technopreneur

All about being a Technopreneur

On the 16th day third week of July, our instructor Sir Randy S. Gamboa discussed the lessons pertaining to Technopreneurship. He also taught us what were the essence and the importance of being a technopreneur. He also presented his own slides that contained all the topics of Technopreneurship. To continue, I just want to share my own understandings and the lessons that I have learned from his lecture. If you want to know, just scroll down and have some time to read my thoughts and opinions of what I’ve learned.

First, our instructor explained to us what the definitions of the Entrepreneur were and how it differs from the word technopreneur. He mentioned a lot of things but the things that I learned about that topic were simple. Being an entrepreneur is that those people who enter into new and pioneering ventures. If you want to become an entrepreneur, you must be a business minded person and your only mission is to start and own up your business. On the other hand, technopreneurship is the same as entrepreneurship. The only thing to consider is the technology that technopreneurs are equipped. There businesses are always in the field of technology. Some technopreneurs are always persistent of doing their own technology just to sell their ideas to different companies or establishments that needs them.

Let’s proceed to the next topic that I had encountered during the lecture time. This topic was all about the SEED course model. Our instructor presented to us the SEED model just to be familiar with the model that would really help us in this subject. First, S means Self-Mastery. According to the slide, this is the passion that comes from knowing me. For me, I learned that when you master yourself, you may know your passions. When you know yourself and your own passion, you know what you want to do. As a reflection, in my college life I was a little bit confused of the things that I am going through. It was just like I am in a long curvy path road with different kinds of signage to the way where I want to be. Learning new things is always there and these things that I am learning really took my head upside down. Sometimes I didn’t know where I want to go and that thing really bothered my college life even now. I am really sad that the course that I took which is Information technology is a very hard course to deal with. Thou, this problem don’t prove that I am not fighting to survive my college life being a student. Instead, I prayed to God and ask for his guidance so that I may able to find my true passion. During the days of being a college student, I slowly identified my abilities and skills and these were the skills that I am longing to have for my future career. I realized that my passion is on the multimedia graphics field because I love this kind of job. The job where I love to develop my skills and abilities is to be in the field of multimedia and graphics.

Aside from the Self-Mastery, the second one that came from the SEED model is the Environment Mastery. According to the slide, Environment mastery is about generating business ideas and seeking opportunities out from his or her environment through. Our instructor discussed to us that the possibilities of generating ideas are most likely be found through:

·         Serendipity walks:  Have you ever taken a walk and stumbled upon something completely unexpected?
·         Crisis:  There is opportunity in crisis.
·         Trends:  Opportunities and innovative ideas can be found in current fads and fashion.
·         Others: Hobbies/Interests, Personal skills and Experiences

These kinds of things must be included to the SEED model. It really helps us how to identify or to master our Environment and what would be the things that needed to do to uncover our true potentials when we pursue to become an entrepreneur or technopreneur.

The third one is the Enterprise Mastery from the SEED model. According to the slide, Enterprise Mastery is how to run a business. Our instructor told us how to run our business when we want to become a successful technopreneurs. First, by creating the business that you want. This would be the first thing to do. Then, when you finished that, you will probably thinking for managing your market, operating your management, manage your finances and managing the risks that you might encounter dealing with the things inside your business.  These kinds of things were already discussed by our instructor which is also Sir Randy during our Project Management discussions last year. It also has these topics that can really help us build and manage our own projects.

The last one is the Development of Business Plan. The slide that Sir Randy presented to us was a little bit boring. Instead, he managed to bring it as a fun way to learn. He cited some of the examples that covered the developing of a business plan. He also told us when we try to develop any business plans, we must first write it. And after that, we must learn how to present it and defend it. We must also try to add some refinements to the presented business plan that we had made.

During this day, there was a time that our instructor commanded us to group ourselves to answer the exercise that he posted in his slide presentation. According to his slide there were three questions that were being listed. So there were three groups and I was assigned to be a part of the group two. The question that we answered was a little bit harder than the other groups. I cannot remember the exact words but I still remember that it was all about being in a situation of depression or something like that. The question was turned like this:

Question no. 3: If there was a college graduate that looked for some Job interview, he found a company and one of the requirements of the Job is to have a “Pleasing Personality”. The college graduate was not able to pass the Job interview because he didn’t have a pleasing personality. What would be the implications that you may say.

The question that we answered was that and we formulated and brain stormed our ideas pertaining to that topic. My group mates and I already knew what the reasons that the college graduate didn’t accepted were. So the implications that we answered were these:
o   The college graduate must find another job that would really match or suite his abilities.
o   The college graduate may suffer a depression.
o   The college graduate may pursue to become more pleasing and learn from his mistakes.

I also didn’t forget this question from our professor. This question was “What makes an entrepreneur a technopreneur?” At first, I already formulated some answers and these answers were already discussed from the previous slides that I had encountered. The real answer would be a “Technology idea owner who ventures to make his idea a commercial reality”. Our instructor also said that an entrepreneur, who gets a technology idea, finds an opportunity to make it a commercial reality.

Our instructor also commanded us to explain the things that we made from the past essays that we answered. Those essays were all about the innovation of technologies from houses, fast food chains and shopping malls. I was the first one to explain what the technologies that I have created were. At first I wasn’t able to remember the full coverage of what I had done to those essays. Then, I already remembered the thing that I wrote in my essay and it was the technology named “Smoking Machine Button”. The smoking machine button was the one that I remembered during that time it was because I already started my explanation in the technology from fast food chains. Then I explained it to the whole class but our instructor thought that it was a simple technology and he didn’t found it appealing and useful to the fast food chains.

To continue, I was assigned to express and write my learning about the alternative mindset and the concept of Job creation. First, our professor which is Randy S. Gamboa told us that there are two mindsets of a human being. First is the default mindset and the second one is the Alternative mindset. I have learned that the default mindset or what we called the “Employment Mindset” is the idea which is what most of the humans thinks. This idea is to “go to school, get good grades and land a high-paying job”.  Of course, all of us wanted to get good grades and get a high-paying salary from the job that we wanted to get. Usually, we encountered this kind of mindset to some of the parents in our society. The default mindset of the parents sets their kids in the school to get some good grades and to be able to graduate and get some nice job that would pay a high salary for their kids or to be specific these may look like this: “Go to school, get good grades and land a high-paying job”. This is probably the reason why some of the parents in our society commonly have a default mindset. A straightforward mindset that is systematically presented by the parents and which their children bear until they go to college.

Dealing with the mindset that is usually common to each family in our society, this “Default mindset” can be a perfect thing that the parents would think for their kids. What if there is also an alternative mindset that would change everything. As what our instructor said, the Alternative mindset or what we call the Technopreneurship mindset shows a mindset which applies to the opportunities provided by technology and the usual idea of some other people which is to “go to school, get good grades, and create your own company” not only that the Alternative Mindset provided supplementary concepts like the utilization of knowledge and skills paired with core values and the passion to innovate and create the way of technology.

This mindset would aid some entrepreneurs to become more inclined with technologies and it would help them to make a way that all of the technologies that they made would really have a good results like creating their own name in the world of technology based business industry. This alternative mindset would really help some of the intellectual and technical capable individuals to stay in their own country and to avoid circumstances like leaving from their own country to help other country by their own skills.

The last topic that I want to share to you is about the concept of Job creation. Job creation usually involves in doing what would be the best for us. This concept can be first achieved by the use of SEED curriculum as a model. Its primary purpose is to train students to develop them in the proper discipline and make them ready in gratifying to technology-based enterprise management, may it be as company or enterprise leaders or as technology-based company employees.

The job creation always starts by identifying ourselves. It is also indicated to the SEED curriculum that the primary step when you need to be a good technopreneur is that we need to identify what we really are and we must be aware to ourselves in order to know our passions and even limitations. The next thing that I have learned is to be independent. Being independent to yourself is essential for you because this is the way that you are able to identify your limitations of being a technopreneur. You must also depend on the things that are important to you. Especially when you are trying to find some solutions that you cannot handle, you must also think of being dependent to the other things that surround you. Don’t e fooled with other things and don’t be like a robot that there is some other person is controlling your body. Instead, be the controller so that you would achieve what you want for your job.

I am always longing to have a business someday that would bring myself to the next level. Of course, all of us want to have good businesses that could be managed well. So if we want that to happen, let us all learn the principles and the mindsets of being a technopreneur and let us not forget God. Everything would be satisfactory if we put God first.

Emotional Intelligence (EQ) and Adversity Quotient Test

EQ (Emotional Quotient) Test
Let me share this EQ (Emotional Quotient) test or also known as Emotional Intelligence test that I took from the websitehttp://testyourself.psychtests.com.
First, I answered all 146 questions fairly and I came up with this results.
One of the questions that appeared on the online test was this.

The test was asking how I would react to a situation like this in my own perspective. To measure my emotional intelligence, this question was asking me to react on what would be the product that I would advocate to a client that doesn’t fit his/her needs. So I was thinking that if I were a salesperson, I would probably not advocate my client a service that doesn’t fit his needs because ethically saying we must not do it for the sake of our qualities as a person. It wouldn’t be nice to the client and he/she might get disappointed on me.

The question that appeared in this test was this:

The item above was asking how would I think or observed to those people that are present in the image.

I was asked to observe and think what was Ellen most likely feeling at the moment in the picture when she was taken. I analyzed Ellen’s face and then I chose the answer "Stressed" because i really thought that she looks like stressed at that moment. In the picture, you wouldn’t determine her face clearly because of the appearance of her emotions.
After all of the questions that I have already answered, I have this result:

The image shows that I have 61 out of 100 in the emotional Identification, perception and expression. I got at least some basic skill when it comes to identifying, perceiving and expressing emotions in myself and others. I already realized that there is still a great deal of room to improve on this core ability.

 AQ (Adversity Quotient) Test
Let me share this AQ Test or also known as Adversity Quotient test that I took from the website http://articles.latimes.com/1998/may/18/news/ss-51010.

Base on my own understanding in this test, some employers are using AQ to predict employee’s levels of success, stress threshold, performance, risk-taking, capacity for change, productivity, perseverance, improvement, energy and health.

The test provided me eight questions and it was all about numbers. Here are some questions that I have found in this test.
Imagine the following situations as if they were happening right now. Then circle your answer to each one.
Situation no.1: You are criticized for a big project you just completed.
Question: The reason I was criticized is something that:
I was allowed to answer between the ranges of 1-5. And it looks like this:
“Relates to all aspects of my life 1 2 3 4 5 Just relates to this situation”
Then I chose the number 4. T just relates to the situation.
Then after I answered all eight questions, I summed all of it and gained 25 points.
The scoring process is this:
Scoring Instructions:
Add together all the numbers you circled to get your overall AQ. insert your total in the box:
Low AQ (8-18) indicates that you have a difficult time dealing with adversity, and/or adversity takes an unnecessary toll on your energy, performance and spirit. Strengthening your AQ can improve your natural resilience and lessen the fallout from adversity.
Moderate AQ (19-31) indicates you deal with adversity fairly well, however your performance can be enhanced with a higher AQ.
High AQ (32-40) indicates a high tolerance for adversity and the ability to persevere through changing times. You may be strengthened by adversity, especially over time. You probably embrace the right kind of change and take necessary risks.
To sum up, I gained a moderate AQ that indicates my deal with adversity fairly well, however my performance can be enhanced with a higher AQ.

Technopreneurship- Reflection for the movie "The 3 Idiots"

Reflection 2: The 3 Idiots
The Fundamental Nature of Learning

When we say learning, what would be the first thing that would come through our minds?  Now let’s define the word learning. According to Wikipedia.com, learning is acquiring new, or modifying existing, knowledge, behaviors, skills, values, or preferences and may involve synthesizing different types of information.  Therefore, education without learning is useless of course. All of us must be educated and learn something new with the use of our parent’s guidance and with the help of our teachers in our school.

While learning, we have to struggle and go for the obstacles that are waiting for us in this big horrendous world. On the 15th of July, I was able to watch the Bollywood film named “3 Idiots”. This film was released in 2009 and was first introduced to me when I was in my 2nd year in college.  3 IDIOTS is not about idiots or nincompoops. It's about three engineering students who believe in 'I'll Do It On my Terms' and those are what the three characters achieve in life and that's what Hirani, Chopra, Aamir eventually achieve at the end of the movie. Our professor assigned us to have at least three thousand words in our essay about what are the reflections of the three characters in this story. That leaded me to watch the movie all over again. The movie was encouraging, entertaining and inspiring. The three main casts of the movie were Farhan Qureshi played by R. Madhavan, Raju Rastogi played by Sharman Joshi and Ranchoddas “Rancho” Shamaldas Chancahad/Phunsuk Wangdu played by Aamir Khan. To explicate my reflections about these three characters in the movie, let me start with Raju Rastogi.

Raju Rastogi was the religious one among these three casts. He came to a very poor and unfortunate family. He has a very religious mother and a father suffering from a disease and has a paralyzed body. During his childhood, he already experienced all the sufferings and poverty in their family. His only dream was to bring their family away from poverty and achieve a brighter future with the use of his knowledge. By pursuing his dream, he enrolled in Imperial College of Engineering. As time goes by, he met his two best friends inside this college. His best friends were Ranchoddas “Rancho” Shamaldas and Farhan Qureshi.

Raju Rastogi was afraid of all the things inside the college especially in his professor named Viru Sahastrabuddhe. He was so pessimistic in his life and he was too desperate to cure the disease of his father that was suffering in paralysis in his body. When the day came that his father’s disease was too severe, his friend Rancho tried to help his father. Rancho used his motorcycle together with his friend Pia to accompany the paralyzed body of his father to the hospital. Raju’s hearth was about to explode when he saw his father dying in pain. And when the time passed by, his father seemed to be okay and all of it was caused by Ranchos determination to help save his father. Then Rancho told Raju to be positive always. He said to rancho that friendship is the biggest asst of human. Then Raju slowly realized that thing and he was enlightened with those words Rancho gave him and hugs his friend as tight as he can.

As he continues learning in the college of engineering, he had gain lots of experience together with his two best friends. One day, when they got drunk and they were at the middle of the conversation which involved Rancho’s admiration to Pia, they both agreed that if Rancho would successfully tell Pia what he really felt for her, Raju would have to go to a job interview and Farhan would tell his parents especially his father that he really wanted to be a wildlife photographer rather than to be an engineer. Soon, they both concur with these agreements while they were drunk. Raju and Farhan dared Rancho to go to Pia’s House to tell what his true feelings for her were. Rancho and his friends finally reached the house and Rancho slowly told Pia about her feelings. While they were in the middle of conversation, Raju decided to go away because they already knew that Pia’s father which is Prof. Viru was approaching towards them. They pee the door of the house and ran away as fast as they can. Soon Prof. Viru noticed the face of Raju because he was drank at that moment. Prof. Viru told a police man to find them, but they successfully entered their class room inside the college.  They slept inside the classroom and then they didn’t even notice that they were already late because they got drunk. On that day, Prof. Viru told Raju to go to his office, then Raju and and his professor had a little conversation. The conversation involved the topic of his parents and what would be the result for being expelled in the college where he was currently studying. So far, the professor would not tolerate the incident happened in his house last night that Raju and his friends had been drunk and got into trouble. His professor told Raju that he would be expelled in the college if he wouldn’t follow the instruction that was given to him. The instruction that was given to him by his Professor was not simple. This instruction involved his parents and his friend Rancho. He was commanded to choose either his family or his friend that would be an exchange for the purpose that he wouldn’t be expelled in the college. At the moment when he was choosing between the two of them, he didn’t choose anything at all rather he chose to commit suicide. He jumped off from the third floor and gained lots of injuries from his body.

His friend Rancho helped him immediately and they carried him all the way to the hospital. Rancho was determined to make him alive. He tried his best to help Raju fight for his life at that moment. However, Rancho was successful of all the things he made just to help Raju recover from his severe injuries.  In fact, Raju was determined to continue his dream of becoming an engineer and to graduate and help his parents. He was successful of finding a job interview and soon gained a job with the help of his best friends.

Raju was a good example of a weak student came from a less fortunate family that was slowly uplifted and gained confidence to pursue his dreams in life with the help of his friends. As I reflect myself into his life, I would probably say that I am also like him. The way he was so weak and pressured and so pessimistic when he entered his college life, these characteristics were all also the same to mine when I also entered my college life. During my college life, I was also a pressured student and always look down to myself. I like to have “self pity” every time I got lower grades in each of my subjects during college. Then, I slowly realized that these kind of attitudes where definitely wrong for me. I ask God to help me recover from these sicknesses. Committing suicide was never come to my mind to resolve these dilemmas in my life. I trust God and put my heart just to love my course. I always pray to God that he will always give me wisdom to understand the lessons that would be tackled by our professors especially in programming subjects.  So far, Raju’s life touched my heart and he made me realize the true essence of learning how to overcome stress and pressure. His story teaches me how to become a better person and achieve a life that’s full of good vibes.

The second cast that I would be telling to you is Fahran Qureshi. Among all the casts, he was the one who made me think of having the right path to go and build my own future and follow what my heart truly desires. He is the only child of a middle class family. Given that birth he was already conserved to be an engineer by his father. He was pressured by his own family that is why he took engineering at Imperial College of Engineering. His parents, especially his father, really worked hard and did everything to make sure that their son will be a successful engineer someday to the point that they installed an air conditioner to Farhan’s room to make him comfortable while studying. His father did all of this because he expected his son to be a rich man in the future. Although he was lucky for being one of the students who passed the entrance exam over thousands of applicants in Imperial College of Engineering, his heart still stayed to his true passion – photography. His dream was to be a wildlife photographer but his father did not put his aspiration to consideration. If you are a college student like me or if you were a student before, it is possible to have a classmate who was just forced to take a degree instead of following his true passion by his parents. Let us face it, money is essential especially in these times but the reason why some professionals earn large amounts of money is not because of their professions but it is their willingness and passion to what they are doing. Let us take note that not all graduates of engineering courses or other degrees that is said to lead you to a high-paying job becomes successful. This makes me realize that it is not the profession that matters but it is where your passion is.

Dealing with the situation of Farhan, from the day he was born, his family has already plans for his future career and it is to be an engineer. His father worked hard and expect too much that his only son will be an engineer someday that is why Farhan took up engineering at the Imperial College of Engineering. His father thinks that to be an engineer, it will give his son great success, glory and riches. Photography is what Farhan really enjoys to do, where he is so compassionate to give his best shot in capturing imageries. However, it is very contradicting to his father’s will so he still follow what his father’s dream and sacrifice his own happiness even if he was suffering to death. There comes Rancho, who inspired him to be telling his father what really makes him happy. Not money, not prestigious cars and houses, fame and high respect but a profession that will inspire him to achieve success and a passion that will lead him to excellence. At first, his father was very angry because Rancho influenced his son, but Farhan really tried to convince his father not in a drastic suicidal note but with love and so much respect to his father. In the end, his father realized everything so they have a happy ending. When your hobby becomes your profession, the passion becomes your profession. Fulfillment, joy, happiness and love will be the result of passion. Following your aspiration for years, you will surely become somebody one day.

The last cast would be Phunsukh Wangdu who disguised himself as Ranchoddas Shamaldas also known as “Rancho”. Among all the cast, he was the very remarkable and very inspiring actor that I had seen. He did a great job helping all of his people around him. I also thought that this type of guy wouldn’t exist in real life. I think he only exist in movies like this. All of the things that he had made in the people around him were very awesome. I will elaborate those things he just made just to explain my thoughts more.

Phunsukh was forced to use the name “Rancho” during his college life. He did that just to save the career of the original Rancho. The original rancho was very rich. He could afford to buy a person just to save him from a horrifying devastation just to prove to his father that he could do what his father wanted him to be. His father wanted him to become a successful engineer thou he cannot afford to learn engineering subjects by his own that’s why he already decided to took some person that could handle his problems and made Phunsukh carry his own name. Phunsukh was so very clever when he first enter the I.C.E or Imperial College of Engineering. He was first noticed by his friends named Raju and Farhan in a ridiculous activity that all of the freshmen inside that engineering college must be shirtless. He was first commanded by a professor to take his own shirts off. At first, he didn’t agree what the professor commanded him because he thought that would be embarrassing for his own personality. As I also noticed, that kind of activity allows me to think why a male professor would tolerate this kind of activity that all of the freshmen would be shirtless. I mean all of these seemed to be like foolishness for a professor like him. It was useless and nonsense activity for me. While his professor commanding him to take his shirt off, he ran away to the room and locked himself. The professor didn’t want that to happen so he told Phunsukh to get out of the room in just ten counts. If he cannot do it within ten counts, he will pee the door of the room as a punishment. Soon, Phunsukh or Rancho didn’t want to get out of his room so he planned to create a device where he could easily throw the professor away. His creative mind made him a device when someone pees in it, the person will be electrified and suffer a devastating sensation. After that, the count of ten had ended and the professor slowly unzipped his pants to pee on the door then Rancho slowly slides his device under the door and the device was very successful.

Another thing that Rancho made was to inspire and uplift his friends. During their college days, his friend Raju was really pressured in his studies. He has a lot of difficulty dealing with his life because of poverty. One day, Raju was caught by his teacher or professor which was Mr. Viru peeing in his door while he was drunk, Raju and and his professor had a little conversation inside the office after that incident.

After that incident, Rancho encouraged him to continue studying and not to give up his life as long as he can. Then, Raju was healed by his words of wisdom. Soon, Rancho found a girl that would make his life wonderful. He found a beautiful girl named Pia. He realized that Pia has a boyfriend that was so pathetic and so materialistic. Pia’s dad was Mr. Viru and all he could do was to follow her daddy’s command. One of these commands was to marry the men he didn’t want. His name is Suha. Rancho made a way to open Pia’s eyes not to merry Suha. He showed how Suha reacted on the things that were simple. This attitude was hated by Pia and that’s why Rancho really showed to her what was the true color of his boyfriend.

Rancho had done a lot of good things in this movie. He believes that in order to learn we must be doing what we want and not because of what other forced us to do and we must learn not because we are ought to do but we want to gain knowledge. Student like me would think of what if I was like him, I would definitely gain a lot of friends if I were Rancho. What would be my life if I would experience his entire journey when he was in his student’s moment? If God would gave me the power to become like him, I would probably do it on my classmates especially encouraging them to pursue studying the Information Technology course and not to give up immediately. If the course they’d chose was a big hindrance to their success in the future, then I would tell them to follow their true passion and follow their dreams in the future of their careers.

The three attitudes or characteristics had thought me what is the real significance of learning and how Education is prepared. “All is well”. It is always mentioned in the film. This implies optimism and bravery. It tells the audience that one should not panic in difficult circumstances and be optimistic. Never give up and just believe in yourself.  Live every moment to the fullest as if today is the last day. For me, I was so encouraged and uplifted while watching this movie. I was so happy that this movie had done a great job developing my own personality and encouraging me to continue my studies. And always put God first in every step that you would take and don't ever dare to commit suicide.

Technopreneurship- Reflection for the movie "Pirates of the Silicon Valley "

Reflection 1- Pirates of the Silicon Valley Movie

There are three questions that were asked by our professor to do our reflection about the movie “Pirates of the Silicon Valley”.

The first question is:

What are the factors that contributed to the success and failure of Steve Jobs as a Technopreneur?

When we say apple or Macintosh, we already imagined the face of the founder Steve Jobs who died last year. Our favorite products which are Mac Books, IPads, IPhones and Mac Computers are some of the gadgets that Steve Jobs had shared to most of the people in the world. These gadgets cost a lot of money but if you dare to have these gadgets, you may not regret because these gadgets have a lot to offer for the costumers especially in its magnificent features that may took the eye of its users into a different dimension. As what I have observed, Steve Jobs or the Apple Company is really concerned on the design of the interface in their products. Unlike the Microsoft, they pursue the user friendly type of interface in their products like Windows operating system. Who would have thought that he didn’t finished his degree in college but instead he brought his career into a different level and became a technopreneur.

Last 25th of June, all of us were assigned to watch the television movie based on the true-life visionaries whose battle to rule the fledgling computer empire changed the world which is the “Pirates of the Silicon Valley”. It focuses on the battle between rivals Steve Jobs of Apple Computer and Bill Gates of Microsoft. If you choose to know Steve Jobs or Bill Gates better, you must watch this movie so that you would acquire some knowledge and lessons about the past stories from their life being a technopreneur. So if you decide to know them right away, then read more to this article.

Steve Jobs is not an ordinary student as what some of the people expect. He didn’t finish his college because he started his business in an early stage of his life. The business that he started is not ordinary. This business was started from a scratch. In my own perception, this was one of the factors that contributed to his success. His business was to find another way how the ordinary people can also use computers by their selves because at their time only big companies like IBM or International Business Machines can only use computers for their own good. He persevered and found a solution to achieve what he wanted to do. Like other awesome humans, he was a risk-taker. He did all his best just to come up with his idea of his codes to be used in the computer that he wanted to build. As usual, he didn’t come up with good results at first. He tried and tried his best to come up with good results whatever he may encounter in his life. Being persevere was also the factor that contributed to his success.

When he tried to introduce their product to a company, he wished that their product which was the personal computer would not be appealing to them. Because of his clever mind, the company that they visited declined to use their invention. He was so very happy to know that the company didn’t have the interest to take their invention and that leaded him to take that opportunity to make it more powerful and thought of building their own company to produce the personal computers. He also has this tendency of pushing his co-workers to their limits which, if became abusive, gives him the title of an encouraging superior or partner just like what he did to convince his friend, Steve Wozniak, to sell his invention by putting up their own business rather than giving it to other companies. He had a wider perspective in his life and this was also a great contribution to his career. Another factor that contributed to Steve Jobs’ success was how he charms and manipulates possible investors to deliver his business and convince people to buy his product which I think is also the reason why Apple hired him back.

Steve Jobs experienced a lot of failure moments when he was still in the Apple Company. Steve was fired because he had an attitude of being an abusive boss. Why? Because he turned like a monster that he cannot control his rage and didn’t know the right thing to do and all he did was to be an abusive boss that made his co-workers to stay away from him. In my own observation, this attitude of being an abusive boss wouldn’t occur if he did the right thing. The right thing that he must do was to sustain the daily needs of his family and accept the fact that he had a daughter named Lisa from his girlfriend. When the time that his girlfriend needed some help to sustain the daily needs of his daughter which cost a money worth $20000, he declined to help  because he was consumed of his anger to his girlfriend and wouldn’t accept the fact that he had a daughter in his life.  All he wanted to do was to pursue his career and be a powerful man in his time. And lastly, his problem was he was succumbed by power that is why maintaining his success was the challenge for Steve Jobs.

Because of his hunger for power, he made a team named Apple and Macintosh. He was so consumed with his anger that leaded the two teams to clash with each other and that made the whole company suffer a massive failure performances and it almost thorn the Apple Company down apart. Another factor that made him failed was the trick of Bill Gates. Bill planned to trick him because he wanted to use Steve’s prototype of his computer. Bill used this trick to make another prototype for his invention. He also planned to use the technology from the Xerox Company which was the mouse system and the graphical user interface. Aside from that, all he wanted to do was to create another operating system that would surely be different than the Apple Company did. He was been successful for convincing Steve Jobs to give his prototype from Macintosh and it leaded him to create a wonderful operating system that almost all the people are using at the present time. Windows operating system from Microsoft was a bit different compared to the operating system of Macintosh. Macintosh is a lot concerned to the graphical user interface of the computer while Microsoft is concerned to the functionality and the friendly-user style of their operating systems.

The second question is this:

How do you see yourself as a technopreneur?

As I answer this question, let me first define the word Technopreneur. Obviously, the main root words are the words technology and entrepreneur.  As what the online encyclopedia or Wikipedia.com said, the technology is the making, modification, usage, and knowledge of tools, machines, techniques, crafts, systems, methods of organization, in order to solve a problem, improve a preexisting solution to a problem, achieve a goal or perform a specific function. It can also refer to the collection of such tools, machinery, modifications, arrangements and procedures. The human species' use of technology began with the conversion of natural resources into simple tools. The prehistorically discovery of the ability to control fire increased the available sources of food and the invention of the wheel helped humans in travelling in and controlling their environment. Recent technological developments, including the printing press, the telephone, and the Internet, have lessened physical barriers to communication and allowed humans to interact freely on a global scale. However, not all technology has been used for peaceful purposes; the development of weapons of ever-increasing destructive power has progressed throughout history, from clubs to nuclear weapons.

And let us not forget the meaning of the root word entrepreneur from the word technopreneur. From Wikipedia.com, an entrepreneur is an enterprising individual who builds capital through risk and/or initiative. The term was originally a loanword from French and was first defined by the Irish-French economist Richard Cantillon. Entrepreneur in English is a term applied to a person who is willing to help launch a new venture or enterprise and accept full responsibility for the outcome. Jean-Baptist Say, a French economist, is believed to have coined the word "entrepreneur" in the 19th century - he defined an entrepreneur as "one who undertakes an enterprise, especially a contractor, acting as intermediately between capital and labour".

A combination of these two words will come up with a good and better result. Technopreneur aims to provide you with, the latest information on new, emerging Internet technology trends, sifting the hype from business reality. You will get the inside track on all things Internet technology that will impact your business tremendously. Business and technology are almost always entwined. Evolution of technology inadvertently leads to evolution in business as what technopreneur.wordpress.com said.

For me, being a technopreneur in the near future would be a challenging one. This might take me into a wider perspective in my life. To be frank, being an entrepreneur that involves technology would be a hard thing for me to deal with. Technologies that would be invented in the future would be interesting for me. For this reason, I would be glad if I would be a technopreneur someday. I would see that if I would become a technopreneur, I would sell lots of good things that would cost lots of money. The technology that I would really love to sell is for each house in our country. For example, I would think for a better solution to fight insect or pesky animals that lived in each house of our neighbors. This would be a perfect solution. As what my imagination said, these problems might be solved if I could make the insect repelling and pest killer combined in just one device and this would be the “Digital Insect and Pests Repelling Laser”. Ordinary pests and insect repelling might cost a lot of money and sometimes it could take a long period for us just to kill them inside our house. This technology would be really appealing to the community.

To further explain this technology, it would look like an air conditioner and would be placed in each room you want. The system would have a remote control so that you could always adjust all of the functionalities in this device. When you program the laser to kill the pest you want. You will just click the choices in the remote control. These choices are insect or pesky animal. When you try to click pesky animal button, the device’s system would use a laser light that would kill any pests that are currently inside the area where this device is placed. And same as when you press the button for insect, all of the annoying insects would be killed thoroughly. You can also bring it to any rooms you want and press the schedule button if you want this device to automatically work in the right time just in case that there would be some insects or pesky animal that would try to hurt you and your family. This technology is eco-friendly and not harmful to the human’s body. The laser light would not harm any human but will always harmful to those insects or pesky animals in your house.

Sometimes, being a technopreneur is not an ordinary thing to deal with. Of course, you would try to please all the people to convince them to buy your technology that you invented. For me, if I would sell that machine or device, it would take a long time just to make that technology more appealing and more functional to bring your costumers buy all of your inventions. If I might able to do that, I might experience the life of Bill Gates and Steve Jobs. The life that’s fool of hardships and full of stressful moments. As a technopreneur, I must also consider the situation that there will be an instance that there’s someone who may steal my concept or ideas.

To continue, being a technopreneur in the near future would be risky. If I would have the courage to pursue being an entrepreneur, I will have to have a more business-suited attitude which means I have to wipe out my habit of being overdue and I should really try to practice managing big responsibilities. Next, I have to enhance my creativeness and innovative thinking in order to create saleable ideas. Technopreneurs are entrepreneurs who are into the core businesses involving technology-based industries. They make use of technology to come out with new or innovative products through a process of commercialization.

The last question is this:

Would you take the same career path as Steve Jobs took? Why or why not?

Steve Jobs has done a great contribution to the world. He did this by creating a prototype that made the computers achieved the goal to be with the people who wants them. He did this when he was on his young age. For me, I would think that I may take the same career path as what Steve Jobs took. But if it involves technologies like creating computer operating systems, I would choose to go the graphics side.

To continue my answer, let me first share to you what are the things that happened to me throughout the days of being a college student. During my college days, I am always assigned to handle to create graphics for my classmates, professor and even in our subjects and extracurricular activities. One of the best parts that happened to my life when I belong to the graphics team in our practicum or on the job training that happened a month ago. I was assigned to edit some of the pictures that are currently being used by our university site.

I was also commanded by my adviser to create some of the banners to be used in different pages in the university site. That was a bit challenging for me because there were times that my adviser didn’t like my designs and the graphics that I have used was not enough to sustain what he really wanted. And that thing leaded me to persevere and I made some time to examine and search what would be the effective type of designs that would be pleasing to the eyes of my adviser. I researched all the possible things that could help my design for banners to be more appealing. Some of these banners that I have created were for the different college’s sites like College of Arts and Sciences where the Biology, Statistics, Mathematics, Literature and AB language students are. Their banners must have to be like a prehistoric image, has an icon of sciences and art works to define the college’s courses with the use of it.  In the college of education, this was the very tiring and the most pressuring banner that I have done. The college’s dean was very strict with their website and all they wanted to see was the phrase “Center of Excellence in Teacher Education”. And they even dare to change the standards that had been already implemented just to show that phrase in the header side of the website. So, the students that were assigned to the college of education proposed an alternative way just to put the phrase “Center of Excellence in Teacher Education” continuously inside the website. They suggested that what if the banners would be the one to serve as the image to show the college’s phrase simultaneously.

I also wanted to create the banners for our own institution. I volunteered to create the Institute of Computing banners. At first I thought that my ideas for the banners were perfect to suite the design for the institute of computing. But I was wrong. My adviser had a little complain on what my design was. So I changed my designs immediately and come up with nicer banners.  So far, all the banners that I have already redesign was approved by our adviser. The College of Technology was a bit easier for me because I have the idea already on what would be the design for the banner. The design that came to my mind was the technological style like gears and metals. They are suitable for the CT banners that I have created.

As what I have observed in the movie, I slowly realized that I really hated Steve Jobs for his manner and temperament. But he is a sort of a guy that shows an idea that can be great if you will start to work and create. He is a great example that even a person didn’t graduate college or didn’t have a degree can be wealthy, instigate others, and have a mark in the history of mankind. He is truly a technoprenuer, I saw in some sites in the internet telling that he was the father of technoprenuership and I believe in that. I did say no for his outcome because I don’t want the kind of failure he has gone through. He has the best path of success to consider but his failure was not his business or his idea or even his team but it was him. I will not imitate and show off bad influence, attitude, and approach that he showed the people around him. This would therefore be against the principles of technopreneurship. What Steve Jobs did to his employees is he managed them, which is wrong. As a good employer, we should lead them, the employees, to better build a bond, build a team, and together become successful. No one should leave anyone behind. We must always look back although we have gained all the goals and success that we want in our lives, in short always put ourselves on the ground because everyone starts there. We as being an technopreneur, we must possess the good character and relationships between our employees in order for us not to be broken down and fail because of our bad relationship towards our employees.  But I will follow the positive characteristics and develop myself, the skills that Steve Jobs have. I’m inspired of what Steve Jobs positive characteristics and Technopreneurial skills. But as for now, I must study hard and give the best that I could in different subjects so that I will graduate in this course and have a better degree than others.

If ever I would be given the chance to begin my own career I would really do my very best not to meet the troubles and circumstances that Steve Jobs had back in his old days. I would never be consumed by power but as an alternative it will try to stay my feet on the ground. I will really encourage and move forward my employees to do their best in a way that is not abusive but instead being helpful and being a religious person.
